Characters A colourless or slightly pinkish-grey, crystalline powder or crystals, turning red on exposure to light and air.

Appearance of solution Solution S is clear (2.2.1) and not more intensely coloured than reference solution B5or R5(2.2.2, Method II) and remains so when heated in a water-bath for 5 min.
Acidity or Alkalinity To 10mL of solution S add 0.05mL ofbromophenol blue solutionR2. Not more than 0.05mL of0.1Mhydrochloric acidor0.1Msodium hydroxideis required to change the colour of the indicator.

Characters It occurs as a White, or practically white, needle-shaped crystals or powder. Has a faint, characteristic odor and a sweetish, followed by a bitter, taste. Acquires a pink tint on exposure to light and air.

Solubility Freely soluble in water, in alcohol, in glycerin, and in ether; slightly soluble in chloroform.

Shelf life, Storage and Packing
It should be stored in a segregated area in a cool and ventilated place away from combustible materials. Keep in a tightly closed container, sealed until ready for use. It is packed in 25kg or 50kg HDPE bags or drums as required.
